I just read it yesterday after coming across this review. A good read by a smart and insightful writer. Many passages of exquisitely crafted language. Her ability to draw characters with so few strokes is uncanny and should be studied in writers' workshops. I did have problems with the two child characters. They are more caricatures than characters. I'm not saying anyone who never had children can't write about them (after all we were all children once and can base our understanding on that experience) but in this case I think her lack of knowledge of [post-war] childrearing did not serve her well. The ending in particular, while providing something of a happy note, seemed rather absurd to me. I didn't see Imogen as either the tortoise or the hare. She just did nothing, being caught between a rock and a hard place at every turn. But that doesn't really matter and I didn't lose any sleep over it.
